I adored Soft on Soft by Mina Waheed! I fell so hard for both of the MCs, and really enjoyed watching them get together. This is an f/f contemporary romance between two fat queer women of color, and it has lovely fat representation that made me happy. I appreciated the demisexual rep and the anxiety rep as well, and loved the way they were both so gone for each other, and kind to each other. I also adored all the foodie moments, and of course the kitties. This is a lovely, lighthearted swoony low-heat fluffy f/f romance that was comforting to read. And the cover is a perfect match for it!
I am so excited to share this character interview with the two MCs in this romance. I think it really captures the fun fluffy feel of the book, and it was a delight to read, gave me a deeper sense of both of them.
An Interview with June and Selena
Hi there, welcome to Corey’s Book Corner. Why don’t you each tell me a bit about your girlfriend.
Selena: Hi! I’m so happy to be here! My girlfriend is this pouty angel—
June: says the actual angel—
Selena: who I adore!
June: And my girlfriend is an ass-kicking badass who baked her way into my heart.
Selena: *heart-eyes*
Tell me a few faves. You pick which ones. Favorite thing about yourself. Favorite thing about your girlfriend. Favorite memory. Favorite make-up product. Favorite TV show. Favorite song to dance to. Favorite comfort watch/read. Favorite comfort food.
June: …
Selena: Come on you have loads of favorite things.
June: I suddenly can’t think of anything.
Selena: I’ll go first. Ah, my favorite TV show is definitely anything I get to watch with June. We recently watched Killing Eve and it was so good. Sandra Oh for LIFE!
June: Oh, yeah, that was good. We also watch a lot of movie musicals together.
Selena: Listen, High School Musical songs are fuckin’ amazing—Wait, can I say fuck?
June: babe, it’s an interview, of course you can.
Selena: Anyway, yeah. We watch a lot of stuff, we’re homebodies.
June: My favorite memory is when we watched Moana the first time and we both had mascara stained faces for like a good half hour.
Selena: Oh, we also love reading to one another. June reads me all the soft literature.
June: *blushes* She makes me read her all the sex scenes.
Selena: My favorite book she’s read for me was When the Moon was Ours because we played a game of how many times did the word moon showed up. Every win granted me a kiss.
June: It was a good game.
Selena: You can say my favorite thing about my girlfriend is how I can be fussy and insecure and messy and she gets it.
June: Funny you’d say that because that’s my favorite thing about you. You see me in my three-day-old pajamas and just kiss me. It’s been very affirming of my self-esteem.
Tell me about the folks in your life that you feel you can be yourself with.
June: It’s definitely Shelby. I can talk to Shelby about anything that bothers me. Whether it’s how fucked up anxiety makes my brain feel like, or even how annoying it is how some fat people clothes come in ridiculous designs. And of course, Selena. Being myself with Selena isn’t even a conscious thing I do, it’s just the default setting.
Selena: I also feel most myself when I’m around June, and around my mom. Growing up the youngest always meant being somehow left out of the big kids’ talk. But my mom, she never made me feel left out. She sought me out and gave my voice an amplifier. She’s also always been my support.
Tell me about the crush you had on your girlfriend before you got together. What was the spark for it?
June:…
Selena: It’s the dancing isn’t it?
June: *hides face behind palms* I’m so predictable.
Selena: *grin* It’s okay, babe, I fell for your blush.
June: Wait, really?
Selena: Yeah! Your face just flared up around me it made your freckles look like tiny sparkles.
June: *blushes even more* Selena’s right. She danced her way into my heart. It was an outdoor shoot with like four other models and I just remember feeling bone tired, but every time I’d look Selena she’d be laughing and dancing. Slow-dancing to pop music never looked so lovely before.
Selena: Wow, my hips indeed DO NOT lie.
June: Annnnnd this is why I love her.
Selena: *grin*
What talent are you proudest of?
Selena: Is baking my talent?
June: Absolutely.
Selena: *grins* Baking!
June: She should be on The Great British Bake Off.
Selena: I think I’d like to try Nailed It! though.
What is one thing you want to shout from the rooftops?
June: PICKLES ARE LIFE!
Selena: She is…so right.
What talent do you wish you had?
June: Is socializing a talent? Then that.
What would, or does, make you feel safe?
June: Because I live alone with my cats, having them around me with music playing makes me feel safe. I’ve been really bad about asking for help when my anxiety strikes, but lately I’ve been trying to change.
What frustrates you?
Selena: That I have to explain that I don’t want to have my picture taken by strangers on the street. I’m not like Beyoncé level of famous but in a town so transfixed on “clout” I find it difficult to have a slice of private life. But I’ve been managing to keep my distance with having an assistant.
What is one thing you are keeping a secret?
June: If you asked me this a couple of months ago I’d say us. I am a very private person and even the thought of an interview like this would have freaked me out, but I’ve been slowly opening up to people online. I guess having a supportive partner who’d shut out the world when I need it helps.
Selena: *wraps arms around June’s shoulders.*
About Soft on Soft
June Bana might post nearly daily makeup looks that gain thousands of likes but Real Life June has built a wall behind which she exists with her two cats.
But with messy feelings getting in a way of an early hermit life, June begins to realize that she wants more. She wants model/actress, Sunshine Reincarnated Selena Clarke. It doesn’t hurt that Selena is amazing with cats and quiets down June’s anxiety to bearable levels.
June is given the choice of facing her anxieties about relationships to gain not only a girlfriend but also a better understanding of how far she’d go for love.
But would she take it? Would she leave her comfort zone for something softer?
Contemporary fluffy piece where one homebody and one extrovert make one hell of a love story.
Soft on Soft (#FatGirlsInLove) is a sweet romance with a bonus rated R scene at the end. It deals with demisexuality, anxiety, being in the public eye, friendship and relationships combining.
Content warning for a discussion of a passed-away parent in chapter 2 and a depiction of a panic attack in chapter 8. Both are from the POV of the MC and are #ownvoices experiences.
